The local social media

If there's one thing I've noticed about the local Milwaukee media, is that they are trying to keep up with the social media times. And I think they are doing a good job at it. Two companies that come off the top of my mind are The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and 1250WSSP AM SportsTalk Radio. They use Twitter, Facebook, and blogs to reach out to there consumers, and by doing this they are making it a more enjoyable experience for there fans.

What 1250 does with there social media that I really enjoy is when their sports personalities might have a really interesting topic that they are discussing on the air, and lets say you don't wanna call in and give your opinion. You contact them via Facebook or Twitter. And they make it really easy for you by posting the topic on both sites. They usually read off a good about of the posts too, making you feeling like your apart of the show. As for the Journal I really like some of the sports writers(mostly Tom Haudricourt). They write some really good blogs and deliver breaking news. And if you follow your favorite writers on Twitter or Facebook, you get breaking news sent instantly to you mobile device.

I remember back in February when there was a big announcement that I found very important because I am a big Milwaukee Brewers fan. Ryan Braun would not be suspended for failing a drug test. He got off because there was a miss handing of the drug test. I found out via Twitter because of one of the people I follow broke the news(Tom Hardricourt). A few years ago this wouldn't be possible. I would have waited to when I got home from work and get to my computer to read the story, but because the local media has a changed for what I believed to be the better, I was the first of my friends to break this big news. By using social media, local media has made following sports so much more enjoyable.

  2. Ryan I agree with your assessment of the two companies. Social media is definitely changing the way people get information. Also, these methods provide a great way for people to interact with each other, especially like you said if they don't want to call in. Would you say that it's mostly the younger generation that using these sites or do you think it's a mix? Nice blog post

  3. I enjoy seeing tweets directly from athletes on social media as well. It makes me feel like a part of the organization even though I am not. The ability to post to a Facebook page or tweet about the show as it is happening is a lot of fun. On the other hand, I dislike with radio personalities only give a teaser for an interesting story and refer you to their blog or Facebook page. I am listening to the radio for a reason. Are they suggesting that I start surfing on my phone while I am driving?

@Shawn- Based on the Packers sight postings, it looks like a mix of younger and middle aged people. I don't get the feeling the older generation is commenting via social media.
